High Lane, Brown Edge â 1970 Turner&#039;s were a small family bus company based in the village, typical of several small operators in the Potteries area serving what had been industrial communities. Both Smallthorne and Norton were essentially colliery villages.

Unlike many such operators which purchased second hand vehicles, the majority of Turner&#039;s fleet were purchased new, and were kept in very smart condition. Bus no.7 is a Daimler Fleetline with Northern Counties bodywork which entered service just a couple of months before this picture was taken.

Waiting shelter, Consall station, 1978 Famously cantilevered out over the Caldon Canal. The station had closed in 1965 and the platform on the canal side had been dismantled. Somehow the shelter survived. The canal is very narrow along this length by the railway. Maps suggest that it was narrowed when the railway was built partly over it.

We went through to the then limit of navigation, where a dredger and barge and what they were removing were blocking further progress - see <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1616909">SJ9754 : Last bridge on the Leek Branch, 1978</a> - and had to reverse back, including through the tunnel, because there was nowhere to wind. There is a big pool at this end of the tunnel, fortunately.
