The Old Man of Hoy is a striking rock formation located on the island of Hoy in the Orkney archipelago, off the northeastern coast of Scotland. Rising approximately 137 meters (449 feet) from the turbulent waters of the North Atlantic, the Old Man of Hoy is a renowned landmark and a popular destination for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Formed from red sandstone, this iconic sea stack is estimated to be around 400 years old and has become an emblem of Orkney's natural beauty. Its main pillar, resembling a solitary standing figure, stands tall and isolated, surrounded by the dramatic cliffs of Hoy. Over the years, erosion caused by wind, waves, and ice has sculpted the rock, giving it its distinctive shape.

The Old Man of Hoy has garnered international attention due to its challenging climbing routes, attracting climbers from around the world since its first ascent in 1966. The most popular route, known as the Original Route, was initially climbed by three British mountaineers, Chris Bonington, Rusty Baillie, and Tom Patey, and remains a classic climb to this day.

Visitors to the Old Man of Hoy can witness the sheer power of the sea as waves crash against the cliffs and spray fills the air. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, with seabird colonies nesting on the cliffs, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills.

The Old Man of Hoy stands as a testament to the ever-changing forces of nature and serves as a symbol of the wild and untamed beauty of the Orkney Islands.

Rora Head, Hoy, Orkney Looking towards Rackwick Bay (one of the most beautiful places I know). The beach in the bay has huge boulders (6'diameter, some of them) and in major storms they roll around the beach like giants are playing marbles. Hoy (High) is geologically younger than the rest of Orkney, so has eroded differently and is higher.
