WWII defences of North Wales: the gun-house at Llanddona (1) Red Wharf Bay on the Isle of Anglesey was a possible site for a landing by enemy invasion forces during the war, and was heavily defended with barbed wire and other anti-invasion devices. One such defensive position on high ground at Godreddi-Mawr, Llanddona, overlooks the beach on the east side of the bay. It was a concealed gun emplacement in a purpose built building disguised as a typical Welsh cottage. The gun-house can be seen in this view facing northwest above the cottage it was designed to resemble.

The gun emplacement was manned by a contingent of enlisted men who lived in huts on the site commanded by officers accommodated in the adjacent cottage. There was probably a separate storage facility for ammunition, and a small hut that was probably in use as a latrine. There was just a single gun mounted in the gun pit at the open end of the building facing the bay, whose crew would fire off one round per week to test its operation! The gun-house was also provided with three defensive loopholes for rifles, one on each side, and a single one covering the rear.
