Castell Casnewydd, also known as Newport Castle, is a historic heritage site located in Monmouthshire, Wales. It was built in the late 14th century by Ralph, Earl of Stafford, as part of his efforts to establish control over the region. The castle served as a defensive stronghold, protecting the town of Newport and its surrounding areas.
The structure of Castell Casnewydd consists of a rectangular stone keep with four corner towers and a curtain wall enclosing the inner bailey. The castle was strategically positioned on the banks of the River Usk, providing an additional layer of protection. The main entrance was through a gatehouse, which was connected to the keep by a drawbridge.
Throughout its history, Castell Casnewydd witnessed several conflicts and sieges, including the Welsh rebellion against Henry IV in the early 15th century. The castle suffered significant damage during these events but was later restored.
In the 17th century, Castell Casnewydd lost its military significance and was converted into a private residence. It underwent various modifications, including the addition of a grand mansion within the castle walls. However, in the 19th century, the mansion was demolished, leaving only the medieval ruins.
Today, Castell Casnewydd is a popular tourist attraction, managed by Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, admire the remaining medieval architecture, and enjoy picturesque views of the River Usk. Information boards are placed strategically throughout the site to provide historical context and enhance the visitor experience.
