Newport Castle, located in Monmouthshire, Wales, is a historic heritage site that dates back to the 14th century. It was built as a defensive structure by Richard de Clare, the Lord of Glamorgan, to protect the strategic crossing point of the River Usk. The castle played a crucial role in the region's history during times of warfare.
The castle was constructed using local red sandstone and consisted of a rectangular keep surrounded by a curtain wall and a moat. The keep, which still stands today, is a three-story structure with towers at each corner. It features narrow windows, arrow slits, and a central courtyard. The curtain wall was equipped with round towers at intervals, enhancing the castle's defensive capabilities.
Throughout its history, Newport Castle witnessed several conflicts and changes in ownership. It was captured multiple times during the Welsh Wars of Independence and was later seized by Owain Glyndŵr, the last native Prince of Wales, in 1402. The castle was eventually abandoned in the 17th century and fell into a state of disrepair.
Today, Newport Castle is a protected heritage site and a popular tourist attraction. Although only the keep and some sections of the curtain wall remain, they provide visitors with a glimpse into the castle's former grandeur. The site offers guided tours, providing historical insights and showcasing artifacts discovered during excavations. The castle's strategic location, architectural significance, and historical importance make it an important part of Monmouthshire's heritage.
