Welland Steam Rally - going like the gallopers The young engine driver and his Savage centre engine are standing still while all is whirling furiously around them. This is the effect I was seeking. The gallopers were built by Tidmans but later fitted with a Savage centre engine (No. 638). There is also an organ engine that is no longer used. Owned by David Downs of Witham, Essex.

Welland Steam Rally - steam crane A 1950s steam crane by T Smith of Rodley near Leeds. It is used on its own length of standard gauge railway track to pick up large logs for delivery to the two saw benches (one circular and one reciprocating). This is an unusual addition to the rally scene and was my main reason for going to this particular event.

Welland Steam Rally - tractor pull Specially modified tractors pull a large weight up a field as far as they can while the mechanics of the towed weight make it progressively harder to pull. This particular tractor was stuck relatively close to the beginning and surrounded by rubber or clutch smoke, or a mixture of the two.

Welland Steam Rally - the watering station The portable bowser for supplying traction engines with water is filled here using a fine Worthington Simpson horizontal duplex non-rotative steam pump. The pump draws from a stream coming off the Malvern Hills. Steam is supplied by Aveling & Porter 5NHP steam roller - Britannia. No. 8548 of 1915 and now owned by H Collings of Abergavenny. Mr Collings also owns the pump. This is another unusual sight on a rally field and is in the realm of my major interest - stationary steam.
