Aldercar is a small village located in the county of Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England. Situated approximately 10 miles north of Derby, the village is nestled in between the towns of Langley Mill and Heanor. It falls within the Amber Valley district and is part of the parliamentary constituency of Amber Valley.

Aldercar lane is more like a track with a very poor surface with many deep potholes. Just ahead is the flyover for the A610. To the right of the hedge is the site of Aldercar Allotments.

The A610 or Cromford Road has some road works up ahead with the sign saying NO 'U' turns.

This is a quiet cul-de-sac that is a continuation of Midland Road in Heanor.

The building is the former toll office for the Nottingham Canal. This location is unusual in that three canals meet here, the third being the Erewash Canal to Trent Lock. The three way finger post SK4547 : Direction signpost at Langley Mill Basin is a recent addition, not present when the location was last geographed in 2017 SK4547 : Junction of the Nottingham and Cromford Canals

Great Northern Basin

This pleasant spot was once a canal junction where the Erewash, Nottingham and Cromford Canals met; today only the first of these is navigable so it is effectively a dead end for boats that make their way here from Trent Lock. A few yards of the Nottingham Canal provide private moorings and access is through the swing bridge seen here; the small restored building was a toll house. Visiting boats can moor where the blue narrowboat is.

Shipley Working Men's Club

The building may be an unprepossessing 1960s box, but the club itself appears to be thriving with regular live entertainment. Although now known simply as the Shipley Working Men's Club, the old sign tells us that it was the Shipley Colliery Working Men's Club. Mining actually ceased at Shipley Colliery by 1930. On the left side of the sign is the Kimberley Ales yellow hop logo. Kimberley Ales were brewed by Hardys and Hansons at nearby Kimberley until the brewery closed in 2006.

Hops

It is fairly unusual for pubs to brew their own beer but much more unusual for them to grow their own hops. Yet this fine crop - not yet ready for picking - is to be found in the garden of the Marlpool Ale House. Although only a small proportion of the output uses these hops, the fact that the brewery is just a few steps away must make it a sustainable operation. The hops are used to brew 'Straws Gold', a pale ale.

The Angry Bee Micropub, Heanor

The micropub concept seems to have really caught on in the Heanor and Eastwood areas and this one, with its strange name, is located on Godfrey Street in the centre of Heanor. In many ways micropubs are a return to basics - the complete opposite of the food-orientated family-friendly establishments that the large pub groups have heavily invested in over recent years. Micropubs are small businesses, typically occupying former shop premises; they generally specialise in real or 'craft' ales, do without music or other entertainment, and offer at most only minimal bar snacks. But they are great places to meet and chat with strangers in a way that rarely happens in larger pubs.
