Swan Village

Black Country Living Museum - Red by Night, sparks are flying! A special after dark event to live up to the saying that the Black Country was black by day and red by night. Here the chain maker is striking the first blow to fire weld the newly made link shut.

This is an available light shot at ISO 6400 and is therefore less than perfect. However, it captures the drama of the moment.

In the foreground is a board to prompt the audience - ISSOTT. Indeed, it is hot!

Swan Village is a small village located in the county of Staffordshire, England. Situated approximately 3 miles southwest of the town of West Bromwich, Swan Village is part of the Sandwell Metropolitan Borough.

The village takes its name from the Swan Inn, a historic pub that has been a prominent landmark in the area for centuries. Swan Village is surrounded by a mix of residential areas, industrial estates, and open green spaces.

The village has a rich history, with records dating back to the 16th century. It was once a thriving industrial area, primarily known for its ironworks and coal mines. However, over the years, many of the industrial operations have closed down, and the village has transformed into a more residential and commercial area.

Today, Swan Village is a quiet and picturesque place with a close-knit community. It offers a range of amenities, including local shops, schools, and recreational facilities. The village is well-connected by road networks, with easy access to nearby towns and cities, making it an attractive location for commuters.

Swan Village's close proximity to the Black Country Living Museum, a popular tourist attraction that showcases the area's industrial heritage, adds to its appeal. Visitors to Swan Village can explore the surrounding countryside, enjoy walks along the nearby canals, or take part in various recreational activities available in the area.

Overall, Swan Village offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and modern convenience, making it a desirable place to live and visit.

Black Country Living Museum - Red by Night, sparks are flying! This is the anchor forge seen after dark for a special event celebrating the saying about the Black Country - black by day and red by night. The steam hammer has just struck the workpiece and slag and sparks are flying off. The hammer (or 'ommer) driver is on the left. This was a very atmospheric event.

Apparently the weekend uses 1000 litres of oil and is only held twice a year or so. This day was the first time I had seen the hammer run (both in daylight and after dark).

There are very few places in the UK where you can see a steam hammer running on steam. There are still thought to be a few in industry that use compressed air (the visuals are very much the same).

Black Country Living Museum - mind your toes A demonstration of the steam hammer at the anchor forge. This gentleman has just pulled this yellow hot cube of metal out of the furnace and it has landed at his feet. The next move is to pick it up with tongs and literally throw it across the floor to the next operative who picks it up with tongs and places it on the steam hammer's anvil.

A steam hammer in the Black Country A once common sight and in monochrome this has a timelessness. It was actually 2021 at the Black Country Living Museum and the anchor forge was being demonstrated in steam. This event only happens about two weekends a year and this was the first time I had seen this in steam.

They were only rather gently bashing hot cubes of metal, knocking them out of shape and then squaring them up again. Still, it gives a flavour of the real thing and very few people have now seen forging with this sort of hammer (I am lucky enough to have seen this done for real).

After the style of Joseph Wright of Derby OK, perhaps I am being a bit fanciful but this image struck me as reminiscent of the paintings from the English Enlightenment period by Joseph Wright.

The Black Country Living Museum's after dark event - Red by Night. The chainmaker is using the Tommy hammer to finish off his newly wrought chain link. The card in front is to prompt the audience and states ISSOTT and, indeed, it is hot.

Shot using available light, hand held at ISO 6400. Therefore not the highest quality but I love the atmosphere.

Black Country Living Museum - canal arm and lime kilns The lime kilns are about the only original above ground feature on the site of the Black Country Living Museum and were continuous draw lime kilns converting limestone into quicklime for local industry, especially as a blast furnace flux. This was once a scene of furious activity and the three boats could have been bringing raw material ins and taking lime out. The building on the right hand side are all reconstructions as part of the museum. The canal arm is also an original feature pre-dating the museum.

Black Country Living Museum - model atmospheric engine The museum was having a special event to celebrate the tercentenary of Thomas Newcomen's 1712 'Dudley Castle' engine. An exhibitor was demonstrating this modern working model. On the right sitting on top of a mug of hot liquid is a small Stirling (hot air) engine that will happily run on the heat in a mug of hot liquid.

Black Country Living Museum - boiler feed pump This feeds the waste heat boiler in the Anchor Forge. The boiler takes the heat from the reheating furnaces. This inverted vertical single cylinder banjo pump was working to feed the boiler. The stylised wording on the pump barrel appears to be J C Patent and it would therefore be by John Cameron of Manchester.
Very similar pumps were made by Joseph Evans of Wolverhampton.

This is only performed about two weekends per year and is very popular with the public. However, it's not quite as good as the real thing.

Black Country Living Museum - ISSOTT In the nearby chain maker's shop was an audience prompt card reading ISSOTT. This was to get the audience to shout ISSOTT (it's hot) when a piece of glowing metal emerged. The same could apply here at the anchor forge. The oil fired reheating furnaces were said to use about 1000 litres in a weekend. The hot gases pass to the waste heat boiler on the left to raise steam for the steam hammer.

Ignoring modern industrial plants and power stations this is probably the only waste heat boiler the public can see raising steam. I'm unsure whether the boiler at Blists Hill does anything as there is a big modern boiler nearby.

Black Country Living Museum - letting off steam The Anchor Forge was being operated this weekend. At this point excess steam appears to be being let off by operating one of the safety valves by hand. The boiler is essentially a Cornish boiler but set up to receive waste heat from the adjoining oil fired reheating furnaces.
