Mammascolla is a coastal marsh located in the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Situated on the western coast of the main island, it is primarily composed of saltings, which are low-lying areas of land that are regularly flooded by sea water. This unique environment is characterized by a mixture of saltwater and freshwater, creating a brackish habitat that supports a diverse range of plant and animal species.

The marsh is known for its extensive saltmarsh vegetation, including grasses, sedges, and salt-tolerant plants such as sea lavender and marsh samphire. These plants not only provide essential habitat for a variety of wildlife but also help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.

Mammascolla is a haven for many bird species, particularly during the breeding season. Visitors can spot a wide array of coastal birds, including redshanks, oystercatchers, dunlins, and curlews. The marsh also attracts migratory birds, such as geese and ducks, as they pass through the area during their seasonal journeys.

In addition to its avian inhabitants, Mammascolla is home to several species of mammals. Otters can frequently be seen swimming in the surrounding waters, while seals can often be found basking on nearby rocks. The marsh also supports a variety of invertebrates, such as snails, crabs, and worms, which play an important role in the ecosystem.

Mammascolla is a valuable and fragile ecosystem that requires careful management and conservation efforts to maintain its biodiversity. It is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and provides a unique opportunity to observe and appreciate the beauty of Scotland's coastal marshes.
