Bass Rock is an island located in the Firth of Forth, off the coast of East Lothian in Scotland. It is a small rocky island known for its distinctive white color, which is primarily due to the large colony of seabirds that inhabit it. The island measures approximately 350 meters in length and 313 meters in width, with its highest point reaching 107 meters above sea level.
Bass Rock has a rich history, with evidence of human occupation dating back to the Iron Age. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including a defensive stronghold, monastery, and a prison. Its most notable feature is the ruins of a 16th-century fortress, which was built to protect against English invasions. The castle was later turned into a prison, known for its harsh conditions.
Today, Bass Rock is recognized as one of the most important seabird colonies in Europe. The island is home to over 150,000 nesting seabirds, including the world's largest colony of Northern gannets, which number around 150,000 pairs. Other species that can be found on the island include puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes.
Due to its significant ecological value, Bass Rock is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). It is also a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts who visit the island by boat, as landing is prohibited to protect the fragile ecosystem.
