The island covers an area of around 1.5 hectares and is known for its rugged and rocky terrain. It is uninhabited and lacks any permanent structures or facilities. Muckle Green Holm is primarily composed of sandstone and is home to a diverse range of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills, making it a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The island also boasts a rich historical significance. It is believed to have been used as a burial site during the Neolithic period, with several tombs and cairns discovered in the vicinity. Near Carlin Geo The northern end of Muckle Green Holm. Directly beyond on the horizon the round tower of the norse church on Egilsay can just be made out. The ferry we were heading north on made an almost right angled turn here out into the oncoming tidal current, which took us southwards, across the Fall of Warness, to near War Ness.
