Ynys y Fydlyn, also commonly known as Puffin Island, is a small uninhabited island located off the eastern coast of Anglesey, Wales. The island is situated about a mile away from the town of Penmon and is separated from the mainland by the treacherous waters of the Menai Strait.
The island stretches for approximately 0.5 miles and covers an area of around 69 acres. It is primarily composed of limestone and has a rugged and rocky coastline, with cliffs rising up to 50 meters in some areas. The island is known for its unique and diverse birdlife, with a large population of puffins inhabiting the cliffs during the summer breeding season, hence its nickname. Other bird species that can be spotted on the island include guillemots, razorbills, and cormorants.
Puffin Island also holds historical significance. Ruins of an ancient monastery, dating back to the 6th century, can be found on the island's southern side. This monastery, known as Penmon Priory, was once an important center of religious activity and played a significant role in the spread of Christianity in the region.
Due to its rich wildlife and historical importance, Ynys y Fydlyn has been designated as a Special Protection Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. As such, the island is protected by various conservation measures to ensure the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage.
