Whitechurch Hill is a prominent landmark located in the county of Dorset, England. Situated near the village of Whitechurch Canonicorum, it is known for its picturesque beauty and historical significance. Despite being referred to as a hill, it is actually classified as a mountain due to its elevation of 235 meters (771 feet) above sea level.

The hill is characterized by its distinct shape and rolling green slopes, providing a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Its summit offers breathtaking vistas of the Jurassic Coastline, stretching from Lyme Regis to Chesil Beach, and on clear days, it is even possible to see as far as the Isle of Portland.

Whitechurch Hill holds great historical importance as well. It is home to an ancient Iron Age hillfort, believed to have been constructed around 600 BC. The hillfort features a series of earthwork ramparts and ditches, which would have served as defensive structures during that time. Archaeological surveys have also revealed evidence of Roman occupation and medieval settlements in the area.

Today, Whitechurch Hill is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and nature lovers. A network of footpaths and trails allows visitors to explore the hill and its surroundings, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the Dorset countryside. The hill also serves as a habitat for various wildlife species, including birds, butterflies, and wildflowers, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

WWII Dorset - Winterborne Whitechurch: Searchlight Battery -
AA Searchlight Battery: DoB ID: e09907

The remains of a wartime AA searchlight battery survive in a private garden at Winterborne Whitechurch in the form of four huts used for accommodation (all of them are just visible), including one that possibly housed a generator. Currently under floodwater is the concrete base for the searchlight itself which survives in an adjacent field. Known as Turner's Curved Asbestos Huts, they were manufactured by the Turner Asbestos Company of Trafford Park, Manchester. Their use dates the searchlight battery from post May 1942, although the battery may have been in operation before then. The huts continue to be used today as garages.
