Carreg Coetan, located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is a prehistoric burial chamber and a designated heritage site. It is believed to date back to the Neolithic period, around 3,500 to 2,500 BCE, making it over 5,000 years old. The site is situated near Newport, on the northern side of the Preseli Hills.
Carreg Coetan is a dolmen, also known as a portal tomb, which consists of a large capstone supported by three upright stones, creating a chamber-like structure. This particular dolmen is unique due to its well-preserved state and its relatively small size. The capstone, estimated to weigh approximately 16 tons, is supported by two front upright stones and a smaller backstone.
The site was excavated in the early 19th century, revealing the presence of human remains, pottery, and flint tools. This suggests that Carreg Coetan was used as a burial site during the Neolithic period. The chamber would have been covered by a mound of earth or stones, which has since eroded away.
Visitors to Carreg Coetan can explore the ancient monument and marvel at the craftsmanship of the Neolithic people who constructed it. The site is surrounded by a low stone wall and is easily accessible, with a nearby car park and footpaths leading to the dolmen.
Carreg Coetan is not only a testament to the ancient burial practices of our ancestors but also provides a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of Pembrokeshire. It continues to be a significant archaeological site and a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
