Wetheral is a civil parish located in the county of Cumberland, in the North West of England. It is situated on the banks of the River Eden, about 5 miles east of the city of Carlisle. With a population of around 1,400 people, it is a small but vibrant community.

The river Eden flows in a gorge behind the centre line of trees. The helicopter just visible above the trees belongs, so I'm told, to the owner of nearby Corby Castle. (See NY4754 : Corby Castle & River Eden ).North Pennine hills in the far distance.

Wetheral Priory Gatehouse

Wetheral Priory, a house of the Benedictine Order, was founded in 1106 from its motherhouse of St. Mary's Abbey, York. The gatehouse is virtually the only standing remnant of the much grander Priory buildings, and was the main entry into the monastic outer court. The building as seen today dates from the 15th century. It has a pair of domestic chambers on two floors above the main entrance way. These may have been accommodation for a Priory Official or guest rooms for visitors or travellers. The Gatehouse is now in the care of English Heritage.

The Ninety Nine Steps

This footpath leads from Wetheral Station down to the River Eden. The bridge carries the railway overhead. The signpost (not shown) calls them the Ninety Nine Steps, but I used them and I only counted 93!

Bridge across the River Eden

This bridge carries the Carlisle to Newcastle line across the River Eden. The train is headed for Carlisle. Wetheral Station is just across the bridge.
