St.James' church, Swimbridge, Devon A delightful church with a very famous former rector. The Reverend Jack Russell was rector here from 1833 to 1873 and is buried in the graveyard. Devon's "hunting parson" founded the breed of terrier by crossing a local terrier with a bitch called Trump he acquired from a milkman whilst an undergraduate at Oxford. The pub across the road is called the "Jack Russell" and has much memorabilia, good beer, food and a Jack Russell dog ! If you have a Jack Russell, this is headquarters and worth a pilgrimage.
