Penderyn Distillery, Landore

This magnificent looking plant has been assembled in the former powerhouse, later a canteen of a former copperworks at Landore. This building has been thoroughly wrecked but has now been rehabilitated as a new distillery, visitor centre and shop for Penderyn Whisky. This was a hastily grabbed shot as somebody was unhappy with us taking a picture from a public area (the park and ride car park) through an open door.

Penderyn Distillery

This is Penderyn's third whisky distillery and the most recent. It is based in the formed Hafod copperworks' powerhouse that then became a canteen. This building had been extremely derelict but has now been rehabilitated.

This was the former powerhouse and then a canteen for the Hafod copper works that was Yorkshire Imperial Metals. It has now been beautifully restored as a whisky distillery but was a total wreck when I saw it in 2012 - SS6695 : Remains of Yorkshire Imperial Metals Hafod Works, Landore.

Landore Works - rolling mill

This is part of the former Hafod copper works and this shows a pair of two-high rolling stands with gear revers that were driven by a 600 horsepower Musgrave uniflow engine. This replaced an earlier beam engine. This site is finally receiving some much needed attention and it is to be hoped it will one day be restored and in much better condition.

This is the former Yorkshire imperial Metals Hafod Works at Landore. The works closed as recently as 1980 and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. However, this rare 1910 built John Musgrave uniflow built to a Stumpf licence has not been faring too well. My attempts to have an official visit before the works closed and fell into dereliction were sadly unsuccessful. I would love to have seen this works in good condition. Since my last visit in 2012 the site has improved with a new roof, restored crane, security fencing and safe flooring over the previous holes. It is intended to restore this engine to a workable condition but it is a gargantuan job. This view shows it in 2012 - SS6694 : Landore Works - ruined steam engine.

This is the former Yorkshire imperial Metals Hafod Works at Landore. The works closed as recently as 1980 and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. However, this rare 1910 built John Musgrave uniflow built to a Stumpf licence has not been faring too well. My attempts to have an official visit before the works closed and fell into dereliction were sadly unsuccessful. I would love to have seen this works in good condition. Since my last visit in 2012 the site has improved with a new roof, restored crane, security fencing and safe flooring over the previous holes. It is intended to restore this engine to a workable condition but it is a gargantuan job. This view includes the heavily robbed and damaged barring engine in the right foreground. It is intended to restore this first. Paradoxically, a sunny day is not the best for photographing this engine as the light is very uneven.

This 600 horsepower Musgrave uniflow drove a copper rolling mill until 1980 and was in immaculate condition when the works closed. Within 5 years it was a wreck and this was how it looked in 2012. Since then works has started on making the engine house safe and habitable, the crane has been restored and the holes in the floor covered. There is a volunteer group seeking to restore the engine and a bid has been made for money to restore the barring engine in the first instance.

This building contains the remains of a 1910 Musgrave uniflow steam engine with rope drive to the copperplate rolling mill. This was working until 1980 and after a long period of decay the site is now to be restored. The engine house has already had a new roof and the crane has been restored ahead of starting work on the engine.

This is in the open air now. The steam engine drove two high rolling mills via a geared reversing mechanism with a steam reversing engine selecting one of two friction clutches. The clutches are seen here with the rolling stands to the right and the large flywheel to the left. The vertical lever in the middle is moved left or right by the reversing engine and is seen in a near neutral position. As I understand it, engaging the right hand clutch provides direct drive to the rolls with the gear train revolving idly. Selecting the left hand clutch engages the gear train (5 gears) and reverses the rolls although the engine only runs in one direction. As far as I know this is now a unique survivor in the UK and really deserves proper weather protection and restoration.

Hafod Works, Landore - rolling mill gears

This shows part of the reverse gear train on the two high rolling mill. The small idler in the middle provides the reverse motion when the gears are engaged by one of two clutches. The one clutch connects the second motion shaft directly to the rolls while the other clutch takes the drive through 5 chevron gears to the stands. On my previous visit in 2012 I had not completely worked out exactly how the reversing mechanism worked.

These are the remains of the vertical duplex steam barring engine that turned the flywheel of the 1910 Musgrave uniflow engine. The flywheel rim is on the left. The barring engine crankshaft and worm drive gear should be at the top between the two bearing houses but most of the motion has been stolen. It is intended that the barring engine will be restored first and a funding application has been made.

This is the crank end of the 1910 Musgrave uniflow steam engine of 600 horsepower. The foreground is dominated by the large crankshaft governor that shifts the eccentric for the inlet valves. The large counterbalanced double web crank is to its left. The cylinder with its drop steam valves is in the right background. It is intended to restore this engine.
