Old AA sign This style of AA village sign was made by Franco Signs NW1 from 1923 through to the 1930s. Made of metal, the inevitable rusting has taken place especially where stones have been thrown at them. These signs were taken down, together with other road signs and milestones, in 1940. Some villages saved their signs and have re-erected them. Others are in museums and private collections.

Alvingham is a civil parish located in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles northeast of Louth, a market town, and 12 miles southwest of Grimsby, a major seaport. The village lies on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Alvingham is a small, rural community with a population of around 300 residents. The parish is predominantly agricultural, with fertile farmland surrounding the village. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, hedgerows, and fields, offering picturesque views and a peaceful atmosphere.

Cheeky Thornapple pops up amid building work at Yarburgh Dattura Stramonium. The second time one has appeared from nowhere, growing in a crack. I have planted many a one, only to some creature, be it bird, slug or mouse, nip them off when tiny. So this one was tolerated despite its rather bizarre position!

Pine Hawk Moth caterpillar (Sphinx pinastri), Yarburgh (1) A couple found, close to a Scot's Pine. Also 2 of the plain brown moth spotted.

Perfectly harmonised with the identical green of the developing fir cone.

Big and fat as my thumb but almost impossible to catch hold of: it thrashed around, making a ball of itself, first in one direction then the other, then turning itself inside out and back again. So small, but so strong and violent. A friend who found one claimed it attacked her.
