Bryngwyn tramway Part of the tramway linking the Cilgwyn Quarries to the Bryngwyn branch of the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway, now a popular path leading onto and across the common. Some idea of the extent and proximity of the workings of Cilgwyn and Pen yr Orsedd quarries can be gained. There is a heritage explanation board at the entry to this patch of enclosed plots at the foot of the common.

Hillside at Cilgwyn Almost a pleasant rural scene looking into the Nantlle valley, but there's also a glimpse of old quarry workings further down the hillside.

Dorothea Quarry - Cornish beam engine My first visit to this beam pumping engine that had drained the Dorothea Quarry. The engine was built new in 1905 by Holman Bros of Camborne and cost £1925. The cylinder is 68" bore and the beam is unequal giving a 10' stroke in the cylinder and 9' at the pumps. The beam is a twin flitch beam and weighs 22.5 tons. This view shows the indoor end of the beam in the top chamber.
One of the main bearings is seen on the left and was built without a top cap or brass - the beam is so heavy and the engine is single acting so that a top cap is not required. In the background are the catch wings to prevent damage if the engine over strokes on the indoor stroke. The engine ran for 51 years but is now in a bit of a state despite the efforts of one local man to look out for it.

This was in the days when the pubs in Wales were closed on a Sunday so we entered the local through the back door and were joined by the local policeman. I think food might have been on offer as well as drink.

The beam is chained down in the mid-position but there is little weight on it as the pump rods had been cut. The engine was in a bit of a state and the last 36 years will not have improved it.

The beam is held in its mid-position by chains to the cylinder cover. There is not a huge out of balance weight because the pump rods had been cut near the top of the shaft.

The engine was in a bit of a state and I doubt it has improved since 1984.

This is a view in the middle chamber looking up to the parallel motion. This is of the Cornish style with the loops inside the beam flitches and a cap on top of the piston rod that has hidden internal fixings. The radius rods are located by brackets fixed to a massive transverse beam that is clad with timber. The forged offset to the plug rod is a rather inelegant feature that allows it to clear the parallel motion.

The valve gear has been largely dismantled and two of the three valves from the top nozzles have been removed. I understand Dorothea Restoration Engineers (named after this engine) had them in store. I wonder if they still survive. It would make any eventual restoration a bit easier. On the left is the plug rod that operates the valve gear. The coats on the rack give the impression that the engine driver might return at any minute. We have been rather sloppy leaving our camera gear in shot in the background. Pictures in this engine house are few and far between and I'm not even sure who you would approach today (our local contact has sadly passed away).

It is not impossible for it to be restored one day but it is not in a major tourist area per se. This was back in the days when the pubs didn't open on a Sunday but we went in the back with the local policeman and I think there might even have been lunch on offer.
