Holm oak, Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa

This holm oak, Quercus ilex, is growing by the pond in the Jephson Gardens. Holm oak is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region, and has spiny, glossy leaves a little like holly. It has been widely planted in milder areas of Britain as an ornamental tree and there are some fine specimens in the parks of Leamington.

Lidice Memorial Garden, Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa

The inscription on the fence reads "LIDICE SHALL LIVE" GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE 26TH ANNIVERSARY 1967. It remembers the Czech village that was destroyed, and its inhabitants murdered, by the Nazi occupying forces in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War. This act was a reprisal for the assassination of the German military governor, Reinhard Heydrich, by soldiers of the Free Czechoslovak forces in exile in Britain, who had trained in Leamington. The parachute-shaped fountain behind the garden remembers the soldiers, who parachuted into their occupied country and were subsequently killed in a shoot-out in Prague. The domed building is a memorial to Dr Henry Jephson of Leamington, after whom the gardens are named.

Former public library, Leamington Spa

The library, art and technical school were built in 1900; the art gallery, off to the right and mostly off the picture, was added in 1928. The library's tenure here coincided almost exactly with the 20th century; library and art gallery then moved to the former Pump Rooms and this building was converted into housing. The art and technical school had left much earlier. The building is Grade II listed: see the listing at the Historic England site Link

. The architects are given as J Mitchell Bottomley and A C Bunch, presumably of library and art gallery respectively. The building is of red brick and terracotta in a Renaissance style and is not typical of classical Leamington. The photo shows the symmetrical facade, with its deep porch, facing onto Avenue Road. The rear elevation overlooks the River Leam and its riverside gardens and is also symmetrical, with a pair of octagonal towers with turrets, one at each end; one is just visible behind the gables at the far right of the picture.

Former art gallery and public library, Leamington

These were converted to housing early in the 21st century; the library, art gallery and museum moved to the Royal Pump Rooms in the other side of the Pump Room Gardens. Cottage Leamington, corner of Tachbrook Road and Priory Street

Behind, and away from, the grand Regency terraces and Victorian villas of Leamington Spa stood a variety of smaller dwellings for the lower classes, whose occupations made the spa lifestyle possible for the rich few. Many of these houses were swept away in slum clearance after the Second World War; others survived, to become bijou homes in the wealthy Leamington of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The houses here would have been close to the coal gas works and the canal, not a desirable location. The gas works site is now a housing development, visible in the distance.

Electricity substation and elephant mural, Leamington Spa

The mural remembers Sam Lockhart's circus elephants, that bathed in the River Leam at the horse and elephant wash nearby; see SP3265 : The Elephant Wash, Leamington Spa. The mural is by Brink Contemporary Arts; see Warwickshire World Link

. The story of the elephants, long forgotten, was revived by the local writer Janet Storrie in a children's book and they captured the town's imagination. The blogger Tish Farrell is more sceptical that elephants were washed here, noting the lack of surviving news reports, but acknowledges that they certainly lived in the town when not on tour Link

Former Co-op Home store occupied, Leamington

Station bench - Leamington Spa

It may say 'Stratford on Avon' but this bench is to be found on platform 2 at Leamington just east of the main building. The little brass plaque explains what it is doing here: 'After nationalisation in 1948 British Rail owned all rail assets and moved items between stations. This bench has been at Leamington station for many years'. Presumably, then, at some point Stratford had a surplus of benches and Leamington a shortage. Note the differences in the two supports: one showing GWR and the other BR(W), indicating that the one on the left was replaced probably in the 1950s. It is certainly a curiosity but looks as though it could do with some renovation.

Floral train - Leamington Station

Floral trains are a tradition at Leamington and this one can be seen to the east of the main building on platform 2. The board states that it was 'crafted by Moreton Morrell College apprentices'.

Cranesbill by Portobello Way, Warwick

What a sweetie! A jumble of soft leaves and intensely pink little flowers that gladdened the heart. Thought to be Hedgerow Cranesbill (Geranium pyrenaicum), it flowered for only a day or two.

Sheep on Jephson's Farm across the Avon, Myton, Warwick

The Lombardy Poplars follow the course of the River Leam SP3065 : Poplars on the Leam. Its confluence with the Avon is out-of-shot left. The farm is bordered by rivers, housing estates and a railway, and is crossed by power lines and the canal. It produces a crop of lambs every year and nothing else.

Leamington Spa Station

Although this station dates from 1852, it was rebuilt by the Great Western Railway in the 1930s in a fashionable art deco style. It remains a busy place but an unusual - and very pleasing - feature is the large garden on platform 2. Work on this began in 2005 by the Friends of Leamington station and it now comprises a 164ft lawn, a herbaceous border and a yew topiary 'steam train' hedge.

2-4 Kenilworth Road, Leamington Spa

This pair of Regency town houses was built c1822-34 and faces on Christchurch Gardens. Like many Leamington town houses they are built from brick faced with painted stucco and have cast iron railings and balconies. They were later enlarged to the left and to the rear and served as a hotel for many years, first as the Guys Hotel and more recently as a Berni Inn, painted strawberry-ice-cream pink. Space Invader mosaic, Arlington Avenue, Leamington Spa

This small mosaic, of 70 tiles, depicts an alien of the pixelated Space Invader type, familiar from the Japanese video game of that name from 1978. It is set into the white painted stucco of a wall outside a large Regency town house. One tile, near the top right, is translucent, suggesting a moon in the night sky.
