Wasso

Wasso, Orkney is a renowned heritage site located on the largest island of the Orkney archipelago, in Scotland. It is a Neolithic settlement that dates back to around 3200 BCE, making it one of the oldest and most significant archaeological sites in Europe. The site consists of a cluster of stone buildings, known as houses, which were constructed using local materials such as flagstone and turf.

The houses at Wasso are semi-subterranean structures, with walls made of stone and a roof covered with turf. They are remarkably well-preserved, providing valuable insights into the daily lives and architectural practices of Neolithic communities. The settlement is believed to have been home to a small farming community, with evidence of domestic activities such as cooking, storage, and tool-making.

Excavations at Wasso have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, including pottery, stone tools, and animal bones. These findings suggest that the inhabitants were engaged in farming, fishing, and hunting, relying on the rich resources of the surrounding landscape for sustenance. Additionally, numerous burial mounds have been discovered in close proximity to the settlement, indicating the presence of a burial ground.

Due to its historical significance and exceptional state of preservation, Wasso was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
