Pen y gaer is an ancient hillfort located in Denbighshire, Wales. Dating back to the Iron Age, the site is believed to have been constructed around 200 BC and was likely used as a defensive stronghold by the local Celtic tribes.

The hillfort is situated on a prominent hilltop, providing strategic views of the surrounding landscape. The site is enclosed by a series of earthwork defenses, including a rampart and ditch, which would have made it difficult for attackers to breach the fortifications.

Excavations at Pen y gaer have uncovered evidence of roundhouses and storage pits, suggesting that the site was once home to a small community. Artefacts such as pottery and tools have also been discovered, shedding light on the daily lives of the people who inhabited the hillfort.

Today, Pen y gaer is a designated heritage site, protected for its historical significance. Visitors can explore the remains of the hillfort and enjoy panoramic views of the Welsh countryside. The site offers a glimpse into the Iron Age past of Denbighshire and provides a valuable insight into ancient Celtic culture and society.

Pool Park The elegant mock-Tudor style manor house was constructed in 1862 for the second Lord Bagot. In 1937, the house was sold to the North Wales Counties Mental Hospital, which was in need of a second location to house overflow patients from the nearby Denbigh Insane Asylum. Pool Park held 87 patients at capacity, but in times of need had as many as 120. For a brief stint of time during World War II, the grounds also held a prisoner of war camp. The house has stood empty since 1989, when it closed as a hospital.
