Carreg-Cennen Castle is a medieval fortress located in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Perched atop a limestone crag, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The castle has a rich and storied history, dating back to the 12th century.

The original structure, built by the Welsh princes, consisted of a simple stone keep. However, over the centuries, it was expanded and strengthened to become a formidable stronghold. During the 13th century, the castle passed into English hands and underwent further renovations, including the addition of a massive curtain wall and several towers.

Throughout its history, Carreg-Cennen Castle played a significant role in the conflicts between the Welsh and the English. It was besieged multiple times, but its strategic position on a steep hill made it nearly impregnable. Eventually, the castle returned to Welsh control, and it became a symbol of Welsh resistance against English occupation.

Today, Carreg-Cennen Castle stands as a well-preserved ruin, managed by Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service. Visitors can explore the castle's remains, including the gatehouse, the chapel, and the underground caves. The caves, known as the "Darkness and the Devil," add an air of mystery to the site. Legend has it that a tunnel connects the castle to Llandeilo, although it has never been found.

Carreg-Cennen Castle is not only a popular tourist destination but also a site of great cultural and historical significance. Its dramatic setting, combined with its fascinating history, makes it a must-visit heritage site in Carmarthenshire.

The castle was "accidentally" sold to the farmer when the castle was inadvertently left on the deeds when local farm land was being sold in the 1960s!
