Loch Doon Castle Loch Doon Castle was built on the larger island in Loch Doon in the early 14th Century. Although it was small and had a simple design the standard of its masonry was very high. Little is known of its history. In 1935-36 the fine masonry was demolished and moved to the shore to save it from the rise in the level of the loch due to it forming part of the Galloway hydroelectric scheme. The wall cores and later additions to the castle were left on the island.

Loch Doon Loch Doon is a freshwater loch near Dalmellington in Ayrshire; the River Doon flows out from its northern end. The loch was dammed in the 1930s as part of the Galloway hydro-electric power scheme. This raised the water level by over 8m. A 13th century castle on an island in the loch was dismantled and moved to the new shore. The remains of a World War I air training complex can also be found around the shore.

Loch Doon Castle - A 14C castle that withstood attack by the English in 1335. Perhaps not too difficult as it was then on an island in the loch. 600 years later it was dismantled, when the loch was turned into a reservoir and the water level raised, and re-erected in its present position.
