Forest quarry A large part of a low hill in the forest has practically been levelled in order to extract rock which is then crushed to provide material to build a new forestry road. Seeing how thin is the layer of soil above the solid rock, it is a wonder that such large trees are able to grow in such conditions.

New forestry road Under a sunshine-and-showers sky, this picture shows a small section of the new forestry road which has been built to facilitate the removal of the felled timber. The felling of the forest has opened up some wonderful views over Broadford Bay and to the distant mainland mountains.

Left behind There always seem to be a few logs, and a lot of smaller branches, which get left behind following the clear fell of a forest. This log is pointing out over the sea to the low-lying island of Pabay, with beyond, the mainland mountains lined up along the horizon.

Forest clearfell Rows of stumps and a lot of small debris are pretty much all that remain of a large section of forest here. This picture is taken from the end of a forestry road which was built to facilitate the removal of the timber, and shows a view to the low lying island of Pabay and the mountains of the mainland.

End of the road This is the turning area at the end of a forestry road which was built to enable the felled timber to be transported off site. The rock for the road came from a nearby quarry (see NG6225 : Forest quarry). Beyond the road, the view is over the sea to the islands of Scalpay (on the left) Guillamon (central) and Longay (low-lying on the right). In the far distance is the mainland.

We're still here! Although a large section of this forest has recently been harvested, not all of the trees in this grid square have gone. For the time being at least, forestry operations here seem to be completed.

View over a forestry road A recently constructed forestry road provides an excellent viewpoint over the newly felled forest to the sea and beyond. Here, the view is north, over the water of Caolas Scalpay. The island of Scalpay is to the right, and Creag Strollamus to the left. The distant double-humped mountain is Glamaig.

Forestry road The nearest road was recently built to facilitate removal of felled timber from the forest. Now with forestry operations over, at least for the time being, the road provides pedestrian access to some fine views over Caolas Scalpay and Broadford Bay. Here, the view is inland, with Broadford cemetery just discernible roughly centrally, and the conical mound of Beinn na Caillich rising beyond.
