2-4 Kenilworth Road, Leamington Spa

This pair of Regency town houses was built c1822-34 and faces on Christchurch Gardens. Like many Leamington town houses they are built from brick faced with painted stucco and have cast iron railings and balconies. They were later enlarged to the left and to the rear and served as a hotel for many years, first as the Guys Hotel and more recently as a Berni Inn, painted strawberry-ice-cream pink. Space Invader mosaic, Arlington Avenue, Leamington Spa

This small mosaic, of 70 tiles, depicts an alien of the pixelated Space Invader type, familiar from the Japanese video game of that name from 1978. It is set into the white painted stucco of a wall outside a large Regency town house. One tile, near the top right, is translucent, suggesting a moon in the night sky. During the pandemic the Parade (distant crossing) was made traffic-free to allow social distancing. The approaches of the Regent Street and Warwick Street crossings were closed, though some vehicle access was allowed for businesses. On the left the departed Yorkshire Bank suffers the indignity of being to let as a shop.

Leamington's Parade in Lockdown

Leamington's busy Parade was closed to traffic to allow social distancing on footways. The stretches near the eight or so bus stops could be especially congested. Although re-opened to traffic in late summer 2021, a petition was launched to keep the Parade traffic-free.

It is believed to be student accommodation, a genre that has spawned in the town in recent years. For some students, Leamington has the vibe that the Warwick University campus and Coventry University's towers lack. The immediate neighbours of the block pictured are humble 19th-century outbuildings to the rear of the four-storey houses, now shops, on the Parade: the building to its left looks like a coach house. It is certainly a contrast but I think contrast is preferable to pastiche, of which there is a dire example at the end of the street.

The reference is to the gun lobby in the United States: the National Firearms Association. You can feel the anger. The mural below seems unrelated but who's to say? Something to do with Covid-19 perhaps. The location is the end wall of the derelict wing of the Rangemaster factory – the grey area on the right in SP3264 : Eagle Rec, Leamington Spa.

The pigeons are one of several entertaining pieces of street art here. For decades the hope has been kept alive that Spencer Yard would become the heart of Leamington's cultural quarter, a concept that has its enthusiasts and its sceptics. Some would say the whole town is a cultural quarter.

The Thomas James Hotel is located at the southern end of Bath Street, close to the junction with High Street; the cars in this picture are waiting for the traffic lights at the junction to change. The ground floor of the building is occupied by TJ's Bar and Grill - part of the hotel business. The poster on the left is attached to the abutment of the bridge that carried the Leamington Spa (Avenue) to Rugby railway; the bridge deck was removed many years ago.
