Sandness: postbox № ZE2 126 This postbox, serving the western end of mainland Shetland, stands conveniently by a few parking spaces outside Sandness village school, but I think it likely that it has been relocated here since the post office/stores, which was in Melby just to the northwest, closed a couple of years ago. The box is emptied at 7:15 on weekday and Saturday mornings. Beyond, we see a pond in someone's garden, with the island of Papa Stour faintly visible in the distance.

Sandness: disused church at Melby The telltale sign that this church is no longer in use is the fact that the only door is concreted up! The grounds are still in use as a cemetery, though.

Sandness: two sheep and Holm of Melby These two skittish sheep seemed rather surprised to see me - anyone - joining them on this drab, drizzly Saturday morning. Having just gone through their field and now on the seaward side of the fence, we can look back towards them with Holm of Melby, a small island in the Sound of Papa, in the background.
