Layer Marney is a small village and civil parish located in the county of Essex, England. Situated approximately 9 miles southeast of the town of Colchester, it lies within the borough of Tendring. The village is named after the Marney family, who held the manor for several centuries.

The main attraction in Layer Marney is Layer Marney Tower, a stunning Tudor palace. Built in the early 16th century by Henry, 1st Lord Marney, the tower is one of the finest examples of red brick Tudor architecture in the country. With its impressive height of 80 feet, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from its rooftop. The tower is now privately owned and open to the public, attracting visitors from far and wide.

Apart from the tower, Layer Marney boasts a picturesque rural landscape with fields and meadows. The nearby countryside provides excellent opportunities for outdoor activities and peaceful walks. The village itself is small, with a charming church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, dating back to the 14th century. It features some interesting architectural details, including a Norman font.

Despite its relatively small size, Layer Marney offers a sense of tranquility and history. With its historic tower, rural scenery, and peaceful atmosphere, it provides a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
