LMS Black 5 no. 5428 at Grosmont Although this was a walking holiday between school and university, the extreme haziness of summer 1975 meant I took few scenic photos, but as the Coast to Coast walk passes through Grosmont, my inner anorak took over for a photo of this splendid LMS black five. They may, in their day, have been a very common locomotive (and there are lots preserved) but they were (and are) one of the most attractive of mainline steam engines. Not the huge top-of-the line express train pullers, but a general workhorse on both main and lesser lines, and particularly well-suited to pulling short trains on preserved railways.
