Glasshouse in the Victorian Walled Garden at Quex Park The Victorian Walled Garden has featured as part of the garden at Quex for two centuries. It covers about an acre in size. Two of the four walls date back to the time of the Tudor mansion which stood in the grounds prior to the current Regency House.

From 1883, James Cornford, Head Gardener to the Powell-Cotton family, worked the productive garden to the highest level. By 1902 the gardens had over 20 staff. The glasshouses within the Walled Garden were in full use growing ferns, orchids, and hot house plants for display, as well as vines, soft fruit and out-of-season vegetables for the family.

In 1923 Cornford retired and within a few years the garden became an uneconomic burden. The staff were reduced to just two and the Walled Garden was let for commercial growing. Glasshouses were added to raise tomatoes and raspberries, as well as early strawberries and cut flowers, until the early 1960s when it again became a financial burden on the estate and was closed.

It is hoped to submit a funding bid which will enable restoration of the glasshouses, heating and water systems, and pathways, all of which have suffered in recent years from a lack of staff and investment. It is also hoped to create a garden Visitor Centre.
