Balloch Moss is a picturesque expanse of moorland located in Banffshire, Scotland. Stretching over an area of approximately 2,000 acres, it is a significant natural feature of the region. The moss is situated on a gentle slope, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The moss is characterized by its diverse vegetation, consisting of heather, grasses, and scattered patches of shrubs. The vibrant purple hues of the blooming heather during the summer months create a visually striking spectacle. Additionally, the moss is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds such as skylarks and curlews, as well as small mammals like rabbits and voles.

As a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Balloch Moss holds great ecological importance. The unique combination of wet and dry areas in the moss provides a diverse habitat for an array of plant and animal species. The wetter areas are home to sphagnum moss, which helps to maintain the water balance in the ecosystem.

The moss also holds historical significance, with remnants of ancient settlements and archaeological sites scattered throughout the area. These sites offer a glimpse into the history and cultural heritage of the region, attracting historians and archaeology enthusiasts.

Forestry Gate On the edge of the Forestry Commission woodlands north east of Glenfiddich. The sign was a goml one, from the windfarmers who were putting anemometer masts up in this highly unsuitable scenic and peat covered area. I suppose there is a desperate health and safety issue around getting within a kilometre of a temporary mast being erected by non-existent workmen. There was no such nonsense on the track running up Glenfiddich.
