North Weald opened in 1916 for home defence against Zeppelin raids. It was developed in then 1920s and '30s. It became a sector station of 11 Group. A Pilot from North Weald became the first RAF casualty of WW2 when a Hurricane Squadron from here was set upon by Spitfires from Hornchurch! North Weald was attacked many times during WW2 the memorial was erected in September 2000 on the 60th anniversary of the heaviest raid. The building in the background is Ad Astra House the old gate house
