West Mouse is a small uninhabited island located off the coast of Anglesey, Wales. Also known as Ynys Badrig in Welsh, it is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers west of the larger island called South Stack. With an area of only 0.02 hectares, West Mouse is one of the smallest islands in the United Kingdom.
The island is characterized by its rugged and rocky terrain, with steep cliffs rising up to 33 meters above sea level. These cliffs provide a nesting habitat for a variety of seabirds including guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes. The island is also home to a small population of grey seals that can often be seen basking on the rocks or swimming around its shores.
Due to its remote location and treacherous waters, West Mouse is not accessible to the public. However, it can be observed from the mainland, particularly from the South Stack Lighthouse and the RSPB South Stack Cliffs Reserve, which offer excellent vantage points for viewing the island and its wildlife.
West Mouse has a rich history, with records of shipwrecks dating back to the 18th century. It is believed to have derived its name from a rock formation resembling a mouse that can be seen from certain angles. Despite its small size and limited accessibility, the island continues to be an important natural and cultural landmark in the region.
