Castell Biwmares
Castell Biwmares, also known as Beaumaris Castle, is a medieval fortress located in the town of Beaumaris on the island of Anglesey in Wales. Built in the late 13th century, it stands as one of the most impressive examples of military architecture from the medieval period.
The castle was commissioned by King Edward I of England as part of his campaign to conquer Wales. Its strategic location, overlooking the Menai Strait, was chosen to control the crossing between Anglesey and the mainland. However, due to financial difficulties and political conflicts, the castle was never completed as originally planned.
Nevertheless, Castell Biwmares still showcases remarkable features. It is a concentric castle, surrounded by a water-filled moat and four imposing gatehouses. Its design incorporates several defensive elements, such as massive walls, towers, and arrow slits. The layout of the castle follows a symmetrical pattern, with a central courtyard surrounded by various buildings, including a great hall, kitchens, and accommodation for the garrison.
Despite its incomplete state, Castell Biwmares has become a popular heritage site and a magnet for history enthusiasts. It is managed by Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service. Visitors can explore the castle's impressive architecture, walk along its battlements, and even descend into the dark and eerie dungeons. The site offers informative panels and exhibitions that provide insights into the castle's history and the life of its occupants.
