These trees are on the east bank of the river and border St Julian's Glebelands which is a recreation ground. The river in this picture is approaching low tide. The River Usk through Newport has the highest tidal rise and fall of any city in the world thus exposing the muddy river banks for much of the time. The M4 is 190 miles long and runs from London to South Wales. Major centres close to the motorway include Reading, Swindon, Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea. The motorway was constructed between 1961 and 1996. The M4 originally crossed the first Severn Road Bridge. It has now been diverted to use the Second Severn Crossing and the motorway over the older bridge has been renumbered as M48. Wikipedia: Link

Located in a hilly part of Newport, the box holds grit to treat the road surface during icy or snowy weather. The need to do so varies greatly from year to year. The previous winter (2013-2014) was mild and very rainy, with no snow at all and little ice here.

Taken from Pillmawr Road which connects Caerleon to Malpas and is just over 50m above sea level at this point The M4 motorway can be seen in the foreground. The transporter bridge Link , built in 1906, is still the most prominent feature despite much construction in the city over the past 100 years. In the distance, on the far side of the Severn Estuary, is the North Somerset coast ST3266.
