Split Bridge on Lock 35 Stratford upon Avon Canal The split bridge is in two halves each cantilevered out from the sides. This allows a gap in the bridge through which a tow rope attached to a boat at one end and a horse at the other could pass without being unhitched. Over the years of use the tow ropes embedded with grit wore deep grooves in the cast iron parts of the bridge. These grooves can be clearly seen on the right hand vertical member of the bridge. A flat iron plate has been bolted over the grooves to prevent further wear.
