Replacement Stone for Fenwick Covenanters The original stone was renewed in 1829 and replaced with a modern one in 2009. The inscription reads:

HERE LIES
The dust of JOHN FERGUSHILL
and JOHN WOODBURN who
were shot at MIDLAND by
NISBET and his party 1685
When bloody prelates
Once these nations pest
Contrived that cursed
Self-contradicting test
These men for Christ
Did suffer Martyrdom
And here there dust lies
Waiting till he come

It sums up the strength of feeling for the suffering endured by ordinary people for their religious beliefs during the infamous "Killing Times".

Remembering Rev William Guthrie, Covenanter William Guthrie was one of the preachers who were outed when they refused to accept the ruling of King Charles I that he, not Jesus Christ, was the head of the church. It led to nearly 30 years of bitter conflict. The stone, erected in 1854, tells us:

IN MEMORY OF THE REV WILLIAM GUTHRIE FIRST MINISTER OF THIS PARISH AND AUTHOR OF “THE CHRISTIAN’S GREAT INTEREST”. BORN 1620. ORDAINED 1644. EJECTED BY PRELATIC PERSECUTION 1664. WORN OUT BY LABOURS AND SUFFERINGS HE DIED 1665 IN THE CHURCH OF BRECHIN.

Fenwick Graveyard Sentry Box Fenwick graveyard has a stone sentry box at both gates, dating back to 1828. They were used to protect recently-buried corpses from body-snatchers who would sell them to doctors and students trying to study anatomy. Ironically, a wall plaque pays tribute to a son of Fenwick who became a respected demonstrator of anatomy in the 1890s.

Jougs at Fenwick Church In the olden days, the kirk was the keeper of public morals and dealt with offences such as sex before marriage. The iron collar and chain hanging on the wall is the original “jougs” into which people were locked to emphasise their punishment. The Fenwick jougs are still in working order - but they're not used nowadays! The church door shows the date of construction, 1643.
