No, people did not bathe in the bird pond, or "artificial lagoon" which was created only in 2000 as part of a "managed realignment" project. The sea used to come up to the line of building, which include the listed Plummer's Hotel. After WW2 the land east of (above) the buildings was reclaimed (a new sea wall was built) and became valuable and productive farmland. The realignment project put paid to this and breached this sea wall.

The drainage engineers would turn in their graves, but it was decided the birds needed this tiny addition, at huge cost, to the existing thousands of acres of saltmarshes along this coast.

Excuse me - do you mind if I come through? These cows were having their morning rest on the outer sea bank at Freiston Low. Fortunately there is a side gate for walkers so it wasn't necessary to get them to move!
