Shipton Hill Fort, located in the county of Dorset, is a prominent heritage site that offers visitors a glimpse into the region's ancient past. Situated on a steep hill overlooking the picturesque village of Shipton Gorge, this Iron Age hillfort is believed to have been constructed around 2,500 years ago.

The fort occupies an area of approximately 5 acres and is enclosed by an impressive double bank and ditch system. The outer bank is well-preserved and measures about 6 meters wide and 2 meters high. The inner bank, although slightly less pronounced, still provides evidence of the fort's defensive capabilities. The ditch, which surrounds the banks, is around 4 meters deep and would have posed a formidable obstacle to any potential attackers.

Excavations and studies have revealed that Shipton Hill Fort was likely occupied during the Late Iron Age, between 400 and 100 BC. Archaeological findings include pottery shards, animal bones, and evidence of domestic structures within the fort's interior. The presence of a spring within the enclosure suggests that a reliable water source was available to the inhabitants.

Today, visitors can explore the fort's remains and walk along its well-defined ramparts, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The site is easily accessible via footpaths and provides a fascinating insight into the strategic importance of hillforts in ancient Dorset. Shipton Hill Fort is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its Iron Age builders and serves as a reminder of the rich heritage that lies within the county.

St Martin's Church, Shipton Gorge, Dorset The original church, which was probably built in the 14th-century was possibly rebuilt - apart from the tower, some 300 years later. Then, in 1862, the Church body, again, apart from the tower, was entirely rebuilt to more than double its seating.
