Road Castle, Somerset, is a historic heritage site located in the picturesque county of Somerset, England. This ancient castle, also known as Castle Orchard, is situated near the village of Road, just a few miles away from the town of Glastonbury.

Road Castle dates back to the early medieval period and is believed to have been constructed in the 11th century. It is a motte and bailey castle, featuring a large earthwork mound, or motte, with a surrounding bailey, or courtyard. The castle was strategically built on a natural hill, offering a commanding view of the surrounding countryside.

The remains of Road Castle consist primarily of earthworks and some stone foundations. The motte stands approximately 15 meters high and is encircled by a ditch. The bailey is rectangular in shape and would have contained various buildings, such as a great hall, a chapel, and living quarters.

Throughout its history, Road Castle has witnessed several periods of occupation and modification. It played a significant role in the Norman conquest of England and was later held by various nobles and influential families. The castle saw its decline in the 14th century and by the 16th century, it was largely abandoned. Today, only the earthworks and some fragments of stonework remain.

Road Castle, Somerset, is a fascinating testament to the medieval history of the region. It attracts visitors who are intrigued by its architectural significance and the stories it holds within its ancient walls. The site offers a peaceful and scenic setting, allowing visitors to appreciate the heritage and beauty of Somerset's past.
