An old pen made from slabs of slate has been modified and extended using corrugated iron and anything else that came to hand. The slate probably came down from the quarries via the nearby Croesor Tramway. The route of the tramway here was later incorporated into the Welsh Highland Railway.

'Merddin Emrys' Approaching Rhiw Goch

The locomotive, which dates from 1879, seen storming up the line towards Rhiw Goch. The Ffestiniog Railway has three of these powerful 'Double Fairlie' locomotives.

Steam 150

1863 saw steam locomotives introduced on the Festiniog Railway, to cope with increased volumes of slate. Loaded slate wagons ran from the quarries, at Blaenau Ffestiniog, to the ships at Portmadoc Harbour. With a ruling gradient of 1 in 80, trains descended by gravity. Empty wagons were hauled back up the line; initially by horses, then by steam locomotives. May 2013 saw the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highlands Railways' 'Steam 150' event, to celebrate the anniversary of the introduction of steam traction. A token horse made an appearance, as did the gravity train. Seen just below Rhiw Goch.

Sister locomotives 'Blanche' and 'Linda', on the Ffestiniog Railway, demonstrating the differences between oil and coal-fired locomotives. I think that the coal exhaust looks far better. On her last day in service, before being converted back to coal-firing, this turned out to be the last trip for 'Blanche', which 'failed' further up the line. Frustrating for my host, who was rostered to drive the afternoon trip with this locomotive. Seen during the Steam 150: '1863 and All That' event.
