Cleeve Abbey

Cleeve Abbey is a medieval abbey located in the village of Washford, Somerset, England. It was founded in 1198 by William de Roumare, Earl of Lincoln, as a house for the Cistercian Order. The abbey played a significant role in the religious and cultural history of the region for over three centuries.

The abbey's architecture showcases a mix of Norman, Gothic, and Tudor styles. The church, which remains largely intact, features an impressive 14th-century painted ceiling and a beautiful east window. The monk's dormitory, chapter house, and refectory are also well-preserved, providing insights into the daily lives of the Cistercian monks.

The abbey's most renowned feature is its extraordinary cloister, considered one of the finest examples of monastic architecture in Britain. Built in the early 16th century, it boasts intricate fan vaulting and exquisite carved stonework.

Despite its historical significance, Cleeve Abbey fell into decline after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, when Henry VIII disbanded religious houses across England. The site was subsequently sold and repurposed as a private residence. It wasn't until the 19th century that efforts were made to preserve and restore the abbey's ruins.

Today, Cleeve Abbey is a popular heritage site managed by English Heritage.
