An unexpected find at the side of a busy main road in the suburbs of York. The pinfold confirms that this was once a rural community some 3 miles from the city.

A pub with a rather odd name. Presumably the 'Roman' part refers to the Roman road from Tadcaster to York which passes the door.

Holiday Inn, York

Situated in Dringhouses on the SW side of York, the hotel building is an ugly 1960's job which could be anything from a secondary school to an office block.

St Edward's Church, Dringhouses

The church was built 1847-9 to replace an earlier chapel of ease. Constructed of limestone from quarries at Clifford [near Boston Spa] in the decorated style.

The Cross Keys, Tadcaster Road

There appears to have been an inn on this site since the 14th century, although this building dates back to the 18th century. The attic storey looks much later than that.

Walnut Cottage, Tadcaster Road

Originally a farmhouse in a country village, but now swallowed up in York's suburbs. The house dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and is of local brick.

York Marriott Hotel

The first building of any note on the east side of Tadcaster Road as one enters Dringhouses from York. The hotel backs on to the Knavesmire.

Goddards, Tadcaster Road

Goddards is the regional HQ of the National Trust. The photo shows the gatehouse, with the main building part visible through the archway. The house is in an attractive Tudor style and was built for Noel Terry of Terry's chocolates in 1926-7.

Nacreous Clouds

Sometimes also called Mother of Pearl Clouds. Nacreous clouds resemble pale cirrus or lenticular altocumulus and show very marked irisation, the most brilliant colours occurring when the sun is just below the horizon (before dawn or after sunset). They can still be distinguished up to about two hours after sunset as thin grey clouds standing out against the starry sky. In moonlight they may be visible throughout the night. These clouds occur at an altitude between 21 and 30 km and require a temperature approaching -90°C to form. Source: Meteorological Office
