Hilltop snow north of Crickhowell

Snows lies on hilltops on November 22nd 2015 during a brief period of coldish weather in a mostly very mild month. In Crickhowell, there was no snow, only a few icy patches on pavements and road.

Table Mountain / Crug Hywel

Table Mountain, or Crug Hywel in Welsh, is a flat-topped outcrop on the southern flank of Pen Cerrig-calch. At 451m above sea level, it overlooks the town of Crickhowell. The summit is entirely taken up by an Iron Age Celtic hillfort, with a clearly visible earth and stone ditch and rampart.

The parched summit of Table Mountain. Approaching the summit from the sheltered northern side I was surprised to be greeted by a gust of warm air - unusual at the top of any hill. A warm front coming in from a southern European landmass currently experiencing temperatures of 40+ degrees.

Crug Hywel / Table Mountain

Table mountain is rather grandiosely named, being just an outcrop on the south side of Pen Cerrig Calch (SO2122 : Cerrig Calch). It was used as a hill fort during the Iron Age - it must have been the obvious choice for that purpose at the time due to its large level surface surrounded by crags on almost all sides! Crickhowell (SO2118 : Crickhowell Bridge), the town below, was named after the fort. The area surrounding Table Mountain to W, S and E is enclosed farmland.
