The Maidens is a small group of islands located off the coast of East Lothian in Scotland. These islands are part of the Firth of Forth, a large estuary that stretches along the eastern coast of the country. The Maidens consist of three main islands: The Maiden, The Lamb, and The Calf.
The largest island, The Maiden, is approximately 100 meters in length and is mostly composed of rugged cliffs and rocky terrain. It is home to a variety of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills, making it a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. The island is inaccessible to visitors due to its steep cliffs and lack of facilities.
The Lamb is the smallest of the three islands, reaching a height of around 15 meters. It is mostly composed of grassy slopes and is home to a colony of grey seals. Visitors are not allowed on The Lamb to protect the seal population and their breeding grounds.
The Calf, located between The Maiden and The Lamb, is a small rocky outcrop that is submerged during high tide. It is home to a variety of marine life, including shellfish and seaweed.
While the islands themselves are not accessible to visitors, boat trips are available from nearby towns, offering the opportunity to view the islands from the water. The Maidens are a picturesque and important natural habitat, providing a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife in this remote coastal region of East Lothian.
