Macleod's Maidens, also known as the Clachan Sands, is a group of three small islands located off the coast of Inverness-shire in Scotland. These islands are situated in the Inner Hebrides, specifically in the Sound of Harris. Macleod's Maidens are part of the Western Isles, an archipelago renowned for its rugged landscapes and stunning natural beauty.

The islands of Macleod's Maidens are uninhabited and are made up of rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. The largest island, Eilean Mòr, is around 40 meters high and boasts a picturesque sandy shore. Visitors can marvel at the towering sea stacks that rise from the surrounding waters, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring sight.

Access to Macleod's Maidens is possible by boat, and the islands are a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and photographers. The surrounding waters are home to various species of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. Seals can also be spotted basking on the rocks or swimming in the sea.

The islands are steeped in history and folklore, with tales of shipwrecks and mythical creatures associated with the area. The name "Macleod's Maidens" is said to originate from a local legend that tells of three maidens who were turned into stone by a vengeful witch. The islands have also been used as a landmark for sailors navigating the treacherous waters of the Sound of Harris.

Macleod's Maidens offer a unique and captivating experience for those seeking a remote and untouched natural environment. The islands' rugged beauty, abundant wildlife, and rich history make them a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

One of Macleod’s Maidens One of three impressive sea stacks at the south end of the Duirinish peninsula. According to legend they are the drowned wife and two daughters of one of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod. They can be reached by following a foot path from Orbost. If you have a bit of time, it is well-worth meandering along the cliff tops towards Waterstein Head for a while. If you are lucky you might even spot one of the sea eagles resident in the area.
