Lowther is a small village located in the county of Westmorland, in the northwest of England. Situated in the picturesque Eden Valley, it is surrounded by rolling hills and lush green countryside. The village sits on the banks of the River Lowther, from which it takes its name.

With a population of around 200 residents, Lowther is a quiet and close-knit community. The village is known for its charming and well-preserved traditional stone cottages, which lend a timeless feel to the area. The centerpiece of the village is Lowther Castle, a magnificent Grade II listed building that dates back to the 19th century. The castle, although now in ruins, attracts visitors from near and far, who come to explore its vast grounds and learn about its rich history.

Lowther is also home to a beautiful church, St. Michael and All Angels, which is a prominent feature in the village. The church, with its striking architecture and stained glass windows, offers a peaceful place for worship and reflection.

The village is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as it offers a range of activities such as hiking, cycling, and fishing. The nearby Lowther Wildlife Park provides a chance to see various native and exotic animals up close.

Overall, Lowther is a charming and idyllic village that offers a tranquil escape for visitors seeking a slice of rural England's beauty and history.

Newtown, Lowther These estate houses were built next to the Home Farm to replace the old village that was demolished in 1685. However the 17C houses had hipped roofs, so the terraces in this picture are probably later (19C?).

Lowther Castle, Cumbria The most significant feature in this grid square has been the family seat of the Earls of Lonsdale from time immemorial. After the death of the fifth Earl the Castle was abandoned, the interior was dismantled and only the walls left standing as a memorial to past glories.

"EviiR" postbox, Newtown, Lowther Quote from the British Postal Museum: "This box has the scroll Edward VII cypher. Wall boxes of Edward VII’s reign started off with a plain cypher but a new contract with W T Allen in 1904 meant further changes, one of which being the redesign to the scroll cypher used on pillar boxes. These boxes, however being larger in size had this type of cypher from 1901."
