Eelmoor Marsh

Eelmoor Marsh is a coastal marsh located in Hampshire, England. Situated on the eastern side of Fleet Lagoon, this expansive marshland is part of the larger Eelmoor Nature Reserve. It covers an area of approximately 350 hectares and is characterized by its unique blend of coastal and freshwater habitats.

The marsh is primarily composed of wet grassland, reed beds, and salt marshes, forming a diverse and ecologically rich landscape. The salinity of the soil is influenced by the proximity to the sea, creating a unique habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species. Salt-tolerant grasses, such as cord-grass and sea lavender, thrive in these conditions, providing important feeding and nesting grounds for various bird species.

Eelmoor Marsh is home to numerous bird species, including waders like redshanks, curlews, and lapwings, which can be observed feeding along the muddy edges of the marsh. The reed beds attract reed warblers and sedge warblers, while the open grassland provides ideal hunting grounds for kestrels and barn owls. The marshland also serves as a crucial breeding ground for several rare and protected species, such as the European water vole and the great crested newt.

Managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Eelmoor Marsh is open to the public and offers various walking trails and bird-watching opportunities. The reserve is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its importance for wildlife conservation and its diverse range of habitats. It provides a peaceful and picturesque setting for visitors to enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty of coastal marshlands.
