Nikolaus Pevsner wrote in the Buildings of England that the railway came to Saltburn in 1860-1. The development of the resort was led by Henry Pease, the Quaker ironmaster.

The pier, Saltburn-by- the Sea
John Anderson built the Alexandra Hotel at the top of the cliff, and then formed a company to build a pier, which was opened in 1869 and was a great success. The pier was badly damaged on three occasions, and was restored in the 1990s with a shorter length than the original. Old OS maps show it projecting into NZ6622.
Preparing to take a photograph on Saltburn Pier
I was struck by the contrast between my rapid point and shoot snapping and the painstaking preparations being made by these two photographers. In this case I zoomed in more than I intended - I was much further away than the image suggests.
Cliffs and wave patterns, Saltburn-by-the-Sea
The cliffs are remarkably uniform, with clear strata more-or-less level. The geological map indicated Middle Lias in the Jurassic series. the Tip of the headland is just in NZ6922.

Saltburn Pier
Opened in 1869 this is the only remaining pleasure pier on the North East coast. The inclined tramway between the pier and the town opened in 1884 and is possibly the oldest of its type still in operation.

It's end of season and apart from a couple of hardy anglers, the famous pier is empty.
Designed by engineer, John Anderson, it was the first pier on the Cleveland coast and opened in May 1869, measuring 1500 feet in length. Steamers were able to dock at the end, allowing passengers to disembark.
Inevitably storms and shipwrecks took their toll on the structure: in 1875 a gale washed away the pier head, reducing its length to 1250 feet, in 1924 SS Ovenbeg ploughed through the pier leaving a 200 yard gap. 50 years later, a violent storm washed away the glass-sided pier head saloon and more footage.
