Hellier Skerry is a small island located in the Shetland archipelago, off the northern coast of Scotland. With an area of just 2.5 hectares, it is one of the tiniest islands in the region. Situated approximately 4 kilometers northeast of Muckle Flugga, the northernmost point of the British Isles, Hellier Skerry is surrounded by treacherous rocky reefs and strong tidal currents, making it a hazardous place to access.

The island itself is characterized by its rugged and rocky terrain, with steep cliffs rising up to 30 meters above sea level. Vegetation is limited to hardy grasses and low-lying shrubs, which cling to the crevices of the rocky outcrops. The island is also home to a variety of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and fulmars, which nest on the cliffs during the breeding season.

Due to its remote and challenging location, Hellier Skerry has never been inhabited by humans. However, it has a rich history of shipwrecks, with numerous vessels meeting their demise on the treacherous reefs that surround the island. The remains of some of these wrecks can still be seen, providing a haunting reminder of the dangers that mariners have faced throughout the centuries.

Today, Hellier Skerry is primarily visited by wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers, who brave the unpredictable seas to catch a glimpse of the diverse birdlife that inhabits the island. Its isolation and untouched natural beauty make it a unique and captivating destination for those seeking a remote and wild experience in the Shetland Islands.
